VAR official Paul Tierney assessed the incident and decided that Tarkowski had won the ball fairly, making the follow-up contact unavoidable.
However, Webb disagreed and believed that Tarkowski's challenge was a red-card offense.
In a recent interview, Webb stated, “This is a red-card challenge. It’s an error by the officials not to send Tarkowski off.”
He continued, “From the outset with this show, we’ve committed to showing good examples of VAR use and also where we don’t use it in the right way, and this was one of those examples.”
The referee initially thought Tarkowski played the ball recklessly, but the VAR review focused too much on the fact that he played the ball cleanly.
