Martinez, who is currently recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, spoke candidly about his experiences in a recent interview. He explained that he initially felt unhappy despite having everything he wanted, including playing for a European team and representing his national team. He felt empty and unfulfilled, which motivated him to seek therapy.
"I was always against therapy until I found myself at a point in my life in Amsterdam where I had everything," Martinez said. "I played for a European team, I was in the national team, I had the car I always wanted, I played every weekend, and I still felt empty, like I wasn't happy."
Martinez emphasized the importance of humility and recognizing that footballers are still human beings. He noted that seeking therapy was a difficult process, but it has helped him to accept himself and his profession.
Despite his personal struggles, Martinez has maintained a positive relationship with new head coach Ruben Amorim, who he believes has brought energy and willingness to the squad since his arrival. Martinez thinks that Amorim's appointment has been a positive step for the club, which is currently undergoing a period of change.
"The club is obviously going through a process of change," Martinez said. "Since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure, they haven't found a manager who hits the right note. Ten Hag did a remarkable job at Ajax, which is why he went to United, and thanks to him, I joined the club as well."
Martinez believes that change is necessary for the club to move forward and improve its performance. He is confident that Amorim will make the necessary changes to help the team succeed.
Despite facing setbacks due to injuries, Martinez has consistently proven himself to be one of the best defenders in the league. He is expected to return to the starting eleven once he is fully fit, and Amorim will be eager to welcome him back.
Manchester United's preseason is set to begin later this month, and Martinez is looking forward to working with Amorim and the rest of the team to achieve success.
