The match started slowly, with neither team creating many scoring opportunities. Newcastle had a few chances early on, but Brighton's goalkeeper Bart Verburggen was able to save a shot from Harvey Barnes and a header from Joe Willock was just wide.
Before the half-hour mark, Brighton took the lead through a goal from former Newcastle player Yankuba Minteh. He scored a beautiful left-footed shot into the far corner. Despite this setback, Newcastle came out in the second half with renewed determination to get back into the game.
Newcastle had a few chances to equalize, but their luck was not with them. A penalty was awarded to Newcastle after a challenge by Tariq Lamptey on Anthony Gordon, but it was overturned by the VAR. Later, a penalty was awarded to Newcastle again, this time for a foul by Jan Paul van Hecke on Joe Willock, but the VAR review again spared Brighton.
Newcastle continued to push for a late equalizer and were finally rewarded. A free-kick by Fabian Schär was blocked by Yasin Ayari, but the referee awarded the penalty. Alexander Isak scored the equalizer from the spot, but despite late chances, the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Both teams had chances to win the game in stoppage time, but neither could find the back of the net. The draw did little to help either team's European aspirations.
